APRIL 2008, E.V.

Like the theory that lemmings drown themselves in large numbers while attempting to migrate back to Atlantis, I knew it wasn’t so. Okay, I knew that the band members had recently had an important meeting with their management and attorneys, and that this was one of the items to be discussed, but it wasn’t until I was seated on the patio at a trendy café in Studio City, working on a bottle of Heineken and a half-eaten hamburger in the gathering twilight, that I was informed that there was a chance that this was actually going to happen. Without discreetly glancing about, evidently comfortable with those present at the table, in the hazy spirals of bluish cigar smoke, someone who was at the meeting itself divulged the word while stirring a happy hour cocktail with his finger.

While not a total impossibility in my mind, still the news was rather startling… stunning might be a better word, knowing the attitude of the band in question about certain things. Even to those with only a superficial interest in the band, I’m fairly certain that the decision seemed a bit odd… if not disconcerting, and I couldn’t help but wonder what caused such a change of heart? Granted this was perhaps not as baffling as an ancient Abydos bas-relief depicting what looks like a modern helicopter, nor as astonishing as the revelation that the sculptured facades of Notre Dame cathedral are cryptic textbooks that ‘openly’ display alchemy’s Great Work. Still it was something very different than what we are all accustomed to…

However, once I was privy to additional information about this seeming anomaly, having brooded over the news for several days, I was better able to understand why it might happen. In fact, it now began to make a lot of sense. Still, until it becomes a reality, or any new developments occur, it is with a certain amount of trepidation that I even mention it (and at the risk of inadvertently revealing my source). Of course some things never change, and with that in mind, this info is still under wraps… something to be held close to the vest to be sure. A secret not on par with the pyramid rituals, perhaps, nor that of the Cathars, Jesters, and Harlequinades… No, this wasn’t a fragment of a cuneiform tablet that yielded the epic of Gilgamesh and the quest for immortality. This wasn’t even the treasure of Roman catacombs, Greek temples or Byzantine basilicas, but… still, as for unsolved puzzles and enduring enigmas, in the vast panorama of high strangeness, as far as Tool is concerned, things are definitely getting stranger. Perhaps the lemmings really do drown themselves in large numbers while attempting to get back to Atlantis…
